We have the honor to invite you to participate in “Earth Hour 2011” which will take place on Saturday, March 26^th, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, local time. You can lend your support to this global initiative as an individual or organization by switching off non-essential lights during the hour as a sign of support for the fight against climate change.

In the wake of the UN Climate Change Conference, which took place in Cancun in November-December 2010, the global community is conducting Earth Hour 2011 onSaturday, March 26^th, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, local time. This worldwide initiative takes place annually by the initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in order to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney , Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, while in 2010 the number of countries grew to 125, making Earth Hour 2010 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

The aim of the Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) and the World Wildlife Fund Caucasus (WWF) is Georgia ’s participation in the campaign. During Earth Hour 2010, at the request of CENN and in cooperation with the municipality, the external illumination of the Tbilisi TV Broadcasting Tower and a number of municipal buildings was switched off for the Hour.

Earth Hour 2011 takes place on Saturday 26 March at 8:30pm (local time) and is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

This year’s initiative unites an unprecedented 193 participant countries, and over 1,000 landmarks of global historic, cultural, economic, and political significance. These landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the Empire State Building in New York City, the Roman Coliseum, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Brandenberg Gate in Berlin, the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, along with many more. These iconic structures will all stand in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

In addition, individuals are encouraged to join the campaign by switching off their non-essential lights and household appliances for the Hour.

Thus, we would like to ask you/your organization to switch off your non-essential lights on Saturday, March 27^th, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, local time and join this immense global event.

გასული წლის ნოემბერ–დეკემბერში, კანკუნში, კლიმატის ცვლილების თაობაზე ჩატარებული გაერთიანებული ერების ორგანიზაციის მეთექვსმეტე საერთაშორისო კონფერენციის (COP-16) შემდგომ პერიოდში, კლიმატის ცვლილებისა და გლობალური დათბობის თემაზე მსოფლიოშიცნობიერების ასამაღლებლად შაბათს, ა.წ. 26 მარტს ადგილობრივი დროით საღამოს 8:30 საათიდან 9:30 საათამდე ჩატარდება ყოველწლიური გლობალური მასშტაბის აქცია – ”დედამიწის საათი 2011”. აქციის ფარგლებში მსოფლიოს 193 ქვეყანაში ერთი საათით გამოირთვება ეკონომიკური, პოლიტიკური და კულტურული მნიშვნელობის ძეგლებისა და შენობების ელექტროგანათება. აქცია ტარდება ბუნებისდაცვის მსოფლიო ფონდის (WWF) ინიციატივით და მისი მიზანია მსოფლიო ლიდერთა მიერ სათბურის აირების ემისიების შემცირების თაობაზე აღებული ვალდებულებების შესრულების მხარდაჭერა.

აქციის მსვლელობისას გამოირთვება ისეთი მნიშვნელოვანი შენობების განათება როგორიცაა სიდნეის საოპერო თეატრი, სან–ფრანცისკოს ”გოლდენ გეით” ხიდი, რომის კოლიზეუმი, კუალა ლუმპურის პეტრონასის კოშკები, ნიუ იორკის ემფაირ სთეით ბილდინგი, ეიფელის კოშკი პარიზში, ბრანდენბერგის კარიბჭე ბერლინში, სფინქსი და პირამიდები გიზაში და ა.შ. 2011 წლის აქციაში მონაწილეობას მიიღებს ათასობით ქალაქი და სიმბოლური მნიშვნელობის ასობით ძეგლი. აქციაში ჩაერთვება მოსახლეობაც, რომელიც ერთი საათის განმავლობაში გამორთავს ელექტროგანათებასა და ელექტროხელსაწყოებს საცხოვრებელ სახლებში.

კავკასიის გარემოსდაცვითი არასამთავრობო ორგანიზაციების ქსელისა (CENN) და ბუნების დაცვის მსოფლიო ფონდის (WWF) მიზანია, გასული წლის მსგავსად, უზრუნველყოს ამ ინიციატივაში საქართველოს ჩართვა. ”დედამიწის საათი 2010”-ის პერიოდში CENN–ის ინიციატივითა დათბილისის მერიასთან თანამშრომლობით გამოირთო თბილისის სატელევიზიო ანძისა და ქალაქის მუნიციპალური შენობების გარე განათება.
